Acandi is an isolated town in the extreme northern part of the Colombia country in the department of Choco. Acandi means “River of Stone” and economy of the town is mainly based on agriculture, livestock, fishing and informal commerce and shares the border with Panama country. Acandi was established in the year 1887 and became municipality in the year 1905.
Acandi is surrounded by Unguia, chaja, Pinogana District (Panama) and gulf of Uraba with total area of 869 square kilometers and situated 900 kilometers away from Bogota, capital of Colombia. Coordinates of Acandi are 8.5333° N, 77.2333° W.
History of Acandi:
Acandi was occupied by Acandi tribes which mean River of Stones and the region was first established in the year 1890 by Concepcion Gomez with others but the region was regularly flooded by Acandi River. In the year 1896, the populace of the region moved to present location and Acandi became a municipality in the year 1908.
