Cherai Beach – Kerala, India
Cherai beach stretches about 20 kms and is considered to be one among the most important beaches of Kerala. It is about 25 kms away from Ernakulam town and 35 km from Cochin. The seashells found here are unique and one often runs into dolphins in this area. It is the ideal blend of both the backwaters and the sea. The area itself has seen many new resorts and hotels crop up, which have facilitated the increase in tourist activity. Today it is amongst the most visited beaches in Kerala with a view that make it near impossible to tear yourself away once you get there. The 15 km of long golden beach is very clean, shallow, and attracts swimming and sunbathing. This is one of the few places where we can see the lagoon (poyil) and ocean separated only by a few hundreds of metres. One of the main events in this beach is the tourism fest during december. Azheekal Sree Varaha temple is just one kilometre from the beach which is famous for the special chariot kept in the temple. Tourists also visit the Pallippuram Fort which was built by the Portuguese in the year 1503. The peculiarity of this place is that Pallippuram Fort is the oldest existing European fort in India.
