Paramaribo is a prime city and capital of Suriname nation in the Paramaribo district on the banks of the river Suriname River spans an area of 183 square kilometers (71 square miles) close to the Atlantic Ocean. History of Paramaribo:

Paramaribo was founded by the Dutch as trading post but captured by the English in the year 1630 and the city became the capital of the English colony in the year 1650. The Dutch captured the city in the year 1667 and again lost to English and since the year 1815, Dutch ruled the city until the independence of the country in 1975. Paramaribo is home to the Jewish community and it was constructed in the year 1685 close to Suriname River.

Fort Zeelandia:

Fort Zeelandia is the oldest port in the country constructed in the year 1651 by British colonists close to trading post but the fort was planned by the Dutch and later it was returned to Dutch and one of the must visit monuments in the country.

Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge:

Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge is the major landmark in the country constructed over the Suriname River which connects Paramaribo and Meerzorg cities. It is also called as Suriname Bridge, built by Ballast Nedam, Dutch constructor and named after Jules Wijdenbosch, former president of the country.

 

Central Suriname Nature Reserve:

Central Suriname Nature Reserve is the UNESCO World Heritage Site spread across 1.6 million hectares of tropical forest and protected by the upper watershed of the Coppename River and surrounded by topography and ecosystem.

 

St. Peter and Paul Cathedral:

St. Peter and Paul Cathedral are the two major cathedrals in the city of Paramaribo known for its architecture and visited by devotees from all over the country.
