Homalin is situated in the Asian continent towards the northwest region of the Myanmar in Sagaing Region. It is the capital of the town Homalin located in Hkamti District in the Sagaing Region. It has been found along with the sands from the Uyu River, which flows through the township. Homalin is at a distance of 854 km from the capital city Naypyidaw. The geographical coordinates puts the place at 24053’20” N and 94055’26” E. Homalin is also well known for gold deposits.

 

Climate in Homalin:

Homalin has humid subtropical climate and during summer season the average temperature is 340 C and in winter temperature drops to 120 C.

 

History of Homalin:

Homalin is the part of Sagaing region and in 1st century, Sagaing Region was under the control of Pyu. In the 9th century, the upper regions of Myanmar were populated by the Burmans. The Pagan Empire rule ended in the year 1287, and the regions towards the northwest fell under the rule of the Sagaing kingdom. During the period from 1315 to 1364, the Shan Kings of the Sagaing Kingdom ruled the region. Later the Taungoo Kings took the region under their control and their reign in the region existed from 1364 to 1752. From the year 1885 till 4th January 1948, the region and other places of the country were ruled by the British and during the British rule they established the gardens along the banks of Chindwu. During the Second World War, Homalin was captured by Japanese but later in the year 1944, Japanese were forced to leave the town.

4th January 1948, marked the beginning of the independent country, Myanmar and the end of the British rule in the country.

 

People and Culture of Homalin:

Homalin is an ancient town and populace of the region speak languages like Burmese, Jingpho, Kayah, Karen, Chin, Mon, Rakhine and Shan. However, Burmese is the official language of the country. Singing and dancing forms an integral part of the country. There are different religions worshipped in Myanmar. Majority of the population of Homalin follows Buddhism while others either follow Islam, Hinduism, Christianity or Jewish.

Tamanthi Wildlife Sanctuary is located along the Chindwin River in Homalin town and sanctuary was established in the year 1974 covers an area of 596.7 sq kms is home for several wild animals and flora is visited by thousands of tourists throughout the year.

Intercity transportation is facilitated by Buses, Cycle Rickshaws, Horse Carriage, Ferry and Taxis.
