Haikou is sited on the Asian continent in the southeast of the country, China. This place is located in the Hainan province and forms the center of administration for Hainan province. When translated to English the word Haikou means ‘Seaport’. The geographical coordinates puts the place at 20⁰02’34” N and 110⁰20’30” E. Haikou spans over an area of 2,237 km². During summer season the average temperature is 34⁰C and in winter temperature drops to -3⁰C.

History of Haikou

According to historians, Haikou was famous for its harbor which was situated on the west of the opening of the river Nandu. In the earlier times, Haikou was under the province, Guangdong. During the period 1368 to 1644, this place was heavily guarded and several army bases were created in and around Haikou under the reign of the Ming dynasty. In the year 1858, the port was open to foreign traders. During the Japanese invasion from the period 1939 to 1945 the port at Haikou underwent modification. The year 1988 marked a new era in the chapter of Haikou city. The place became the capital city of the province, Hainan.
