Ahmednagar is a township in Maharashtra, India. Ahmednagar has history dated back to 1490 A.D, which is precisely more than 500 years. The city got its name from the founder of the place Ahmed Shah Nizam Shah. It is located about 290 km east of Mumbai, 96 km from Sangamner and 114 km from Aurangabad. It lies on the river Sina and is home to sugar industries. Ahmednagar is divided into three regions; they are the section of north and south plains, Western Hilly section and Central Plateau section. Ahmednagar is home to temples and places that have legendary significance.

History of Ahmednagar

Ahmednagar was one of the five Bahmani Kingdoms. The kingdom was ruled by Mohamed Gawan, which was afterward succeeded by Nizam-ul-Mulk. Ahmednagar was an estate under Nizam-ul-Mulk and was managed by Malik Ahmed. In the year 1489, Malik Ahmed became the prime minister of the Brahmin Kingdom and in 1491 he laid the foundation of the city and entitled it after himself as Ahmednagar. He established new sultanate namely Nizam Shahi dynasty which was declined under Shah Jahan in the year 1633. In the year 1763, the province came under Marathas.

Ahmednagar Fort

It is located in the heart of the city built by Ahmed Nizam Shah around 15th century. The fort has 18 meters elevated fortifications that are supported by 22 bastions. It was used as a penitentiary for captured enemy soldiers.

Ahmednagar Historical Museum

The museum holds more than 40,000 historical documents, 11000 manuscripts and 9000 coins with various ancient artifacts of previous centuries.

Shri Vishal Ganapathi Temple

The temple is located only 3 km away from the city. The temple is dedicated to lord Ganesh and has an 11 feet idol enshrined in the temple.

Kalsubai Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary

It is situated at Akole Tehsil of the Ahmednagar District. It is home to many varieties of trees and species of bushes. Naturalists would love this place, since it has various types of reptiles, mammals, aquatic birds and landbirds. One can also find many historical monuments in the sanctuary.

About Aurangzeb’s Tomb

The tomb was planned and constructed by Aurangzeb himself. After his death in 1707, he was buried at a crypt that was designed by Aurangzeb.

The Bagh Rauza

Also known as the Garden of Shrine is the home to the grave of Ahmed Nizam Shah. The memorial has been made by using fine black stones and has captions of Koran written on it in gold.

Tank Museum

The museum is home to an immense gathering of tanks used by rulers during different periods. One of the principal attractions in the museum is the Mark-I fitted with a tractor engine used during World War I. The other important appeal of the museum is the amphibious tanks that were developed for the Normandy Landings during World War II.
