Berat is a small town placed on the banks of the river Osum in Berat district and lies towards the south central part of Albania country. Berat is situated on the slopes of the Tomorr Mountains and pine woods above the town and the town spans an area of 2.4 square miles (6.3 square kilometers) and located at an elevation of 190 feet (58 meters) above the sea level. Economy of Berat is based on leather, metal, silver and silk working and tourism industry, the town is declared as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. History of Berat:
Berat was populated since the 6th century by Greek tribes and the region was recognized as Dessaretis. Byzantine Empire captured the region during the collapse of Roman Empire and during the Bulgarians rule the region was identified as the Pulcherioplois and later became one of the prominent towns during the rule in the 9th century. Ottoman Empire captured the region in the year 1417. The modern history of the region began from 18th century and Berat was one of the major Albanian cities and in the year 1835, Greek school was established in the town.
