Macau is sited on the Asian continent in the country, China. This place is one of the special administrative regions of the country located near to the Pearl River Delta. The geographical coordinates puts Macau at 22⁰10’ N and 113⁰33’ E. Macau spans over an area of 29 km². During summer season the average temperature is 30⁰C and in winter temperature drops to 8⁰C.

History of Macau:

The year 1550 saw the entry of Portugal traders on the shores of Macau. The then Chinese Empire rented Macau to the Portuguese who made it their trading centre with a port established on the shores and prevailed till the year 1999. The first Church was built in Macau in the year 1576. During the period 1839 to 1842, a treaty known as the Sino-Portuguese Treaty of Amity and Commerce was signed between the Qin dynasty and the Portuguese Government. The year 1928 witnessed the end of the imperial rule in China. The then newly formed Chinese Government signed a new Sino-Portuguese Friendship and Trade Treaty thereby abolishing the Sino-Portuguese Treaty of Amity and Commerce.

The year 1943 marked the invasion of Japan over China. Macau fell to the hands of the Japanese invaders. However, the Portuguese in Macau did not oppose the invasion and were therefore treated with respect. The Japanese surrendered in the year 1945. In 1974, a newly formed Portugal Government broke all ties with Macau only to redefine the place as a Chinese land run by Portuguese Government.

The Chinese Government then acquired total control of the place Macau on 20th December 1999.

People & Culture of Macau:

The descendants of the local people of Macau are known as Macanese. Chinese and Portuguese are the official language. Hokkien, Macanese Portuguese, English, and Chinese Cantonese are the languages spoken in Macau. Other than the large population of the Chinese people in the region there are settlers belonging to Portuguese, Filipino, English and other Europeans in Macau.

Food and Shopping of Macau:

The local Macanese cuisine has influence of the Portugal cuisine. Both, continental and non-continental cuisines are available throughout Macau and the food is rather spicy and lip smacking.

Tourist Places in Macau:

Senado Square:

This square is a public square in the entire region and is sighted at the center of Macau. This square spans over an area of 3,700 m2. It has been considered a World Heritage center by UNESCO.

Ruins of St. Paul’s:

This ruins which was built in 1580, was burned by fire in 1595 and 1601. The construction work was commenced once again on 1602 and was finished in the year 1637. But the Church was again destroyed by natural forces. All that remains is the front portion and the grand stone stairs.

St. Domingo’s Church:

This Church was created in the mid 17th century by the Spanish Dominican priests who were believers of the St. Domingo and Lady Fatima.

Monte Fort:

Created in the year 1616, the purpose of this fort was to protect the Church from Pirates. However, as time passed it became part of the Portuguese army. It is one of the oldest forts in Macau.

The Museum of Macau:

Work on construction of the Museum began in the year 1996 and it was opening ceremony took place on 18th April 1998. Since then it was opened to the public displaying the history of Macau to visitors.
