Behrampur city is located in the Indian state of West Bengal, forms the centre of operation of the Murshidabad district. The geographical coordinates put the place at 24.10 N and 88.250 E. Behrampur is 18 meters above sea level.
Situated in the central region of the state, Behrampur is one of the largest cities in West Bengal. During the summer season the temperature ranges from 30 to 40 degrees and in winter season the temperature ranges from 12 to 23 degrees. History of Behrampur
In the year 1757, the British Raj built a fort in Behrampur after the battle of Plassey which took place.
Karnasubarna a place very close to Behrampur existed ever since 1600 A.D. The fort formed the center of administration of Mushidabad district in the year 1876. In the year 1857, Behrampur was under the reign of Raja Krishnath. The first Sepoy Mutiny took place in Behrampur in 1857. The town Kasim Bazar and Lalbag was part of Behrampur. These place bared testimony to the bloody events that took place in the history of West Bengal. The region had various settlements in and around the river Bhagirathi. Trade flourished along the banks of the river Bhagirathi. The place prospered in the year 1971 under the rule of the East India Company. Before the settlement of the British in Behrampur young generations were told by their fathers that the land besides the stream flowing from the Ganges was fertile and hence fit for cultivation. The British, hence for such knowledge passed from generations to generations, termed the region as ‘The Golden Bengal’.
Before the rule of the East India Company, Behrampur was ruled by the Nawabs. For generations the Jagat Seth family maintained their occupation as finance administrator’s since the time of the Nawab rule.
