Thane is a well known city situated in Thane District in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is located about 22 kms from Mumbai City and about 150 km from Pune City. Thane District covers an area of 9,558 sq. km and the Postal Code of Thane starts from 400601. Thane City is located between 19.172431° N latitude and 72.957019° E longitude and is placed at an elevation of 7 meters.

Thane District is surrounded by Raigad District in the south, Dadra and Nagar Haveli district on the north, Ahmednagar district to the east, Nashik district towards northeast, Pune district to the southeast and Mumbai Suburban district on the southwest.

Ulhas and Vaitarna are the major rivers flowing through Thane District. Rice, vari and nachani are the main agricultural crops grown by the farmers of Thane region. Thane is in third position in industrial sector in the state, houses several medium and higher scale industries.

History of Thane:-

Thane highly witnessed for the rule of foreign rulers like Portuguese and British. Portuguese was ruled Thane from 1530 to 1739 and British conquered the land of Thane in 1784 ruled till Indian Independence.

Yeur Hills also called as ‘Mama Bhanja Hills’ is one of the best weekend picnic spots in Thane District. It is situated in the vicinity of Sanjay Gandhi National Park and houses more than 75 bird species and 11 animal species. Yeur Hills is famous for its Mama Bhanja Temple and Swami’s Math.

Thane Creek:-

Thane Creek is a major bird reserve in the country houses more than 200 species of birds. A variety birds in Thane Creek are golden plover, grey plover, hoopoe, whistling teals, Asian open bill stork, greater flamingo, ruddy turnstone, pied avocet and eastern golden plover.

Har Har Gange waterfalls:-

Har Har Gange waterfalls are considered as the biggest manmade waterfall in India. It is situated in the vicinity of Suraj Water Park. 24.9 meters tall and 26.8 meters wide waterfalls is the major magnetisms of Har Har Gange waterfalls.

Masunda Talao:-

Masunda Talao is one of the most striking lakes in the entire Maharashtra. This lake is well known for its water-scooter rides and boating. There is one temple of Lord Shiva named as ‘Kopineshwar’ placed on the banks of Masunda Talao and this ancient temple was redeveloped by Chimajji Appa in 1750 AD.

Ganeshpuri:-

Ganeshpuri is a village located very nearer to Thane widely popular for its Gurudev Sidha Peeth, a Siddha Yoga training centre. It is also well known for medicinal natural hot springs.
