Marsaskala coordinates with 35°51′45″ N latitude and 14°34′3″ E longitude, is situated about 13 km southeast of Valletta, the capital of Malta.

History of Marsaskala:

The name of Marsaskala is a combination of two words “Marsa” which means “port” and “Sqalli” which means “Sicilian”. Marsaskala was initially settled around thousands of years ago, as of the archaeological findings. The major historical landmarks in Marsaskala include St Thomas Tower, Mamo Tower and De Redin Tower.

Marsaskala is located about 10 km east of the only airport of Malta, Malta International Airport. This airport operates flights from and to several important European cities like Manchester, Milan, Hamburg, Istanbul, Benghazi, Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Liverpool and London.

St. Thomas Tower:

The St. Thomas Tower was constructed in the year 1614 during the rule of Grand Master Fra Alof de Wignacourt by the Knights of Malta. After the renovation, it attracts tourists throughout the year.

Mamo Tower:

The Mamo Tower was earlier used as a residence by the Mamo family who was also the founder of the tower, constructed in 1657. It was also used as a Regional Headquarters by the British Military in 1940. Now the Malta Historical Trust maintains the tower by converting an exhibition centre on Malta’s fishing history.

St. Thomas Bay:

The St. Thomas Bay in Marsaskala is frequented by both locals and tourists during the summer months. This sandy beach features some rocky parts as well.
