History of Ukmerge:

Ukmerge is also called as Vilkmerge which is derived from the Vilkmergele River. In historical records, Ukmerge was originally mentioned in the year 1333 as a settlement. The fortress of Ukmerge was built on a hill in the vicinity of Vilkmergė, and the Šventoji rivers confluence and in the 14^th century, it was heavily damaged by the many attacks of Teutonic Knights and the Livonian Order.

The first catholic church of Ukmerge was constructed in 1387 as one of the first Roman Catholic churches of Lithuania. Ukmerge achieved city rights in 1486 and it was renamed Ukmerge in 1918.
