History of Akureyri:
Akureyri was established in 9th century by Norse Viking Helgi Margri Eyvindarson and later in 17th century, Danish merchants established their camp at the town due the natural and deep harbor. In 1778, permanent settlement was established in the town by the King of Denmark and during the World War II, the town was used as the airbase by the Norwegian-British. Urban towns were established in 20th century.
