Belmopan is the capital city of Belize situated towards the east of the Belize River, located 80 kilometers away from the former capital of the Belize; Belize City capital was moved from Belize City to Belmopan due to the destruction by Hurricane Hattie in the year 1961. Belmopan is situated at an elevation of 250 feet (76 meters) above the sea level and all the major government, industrial and commercial buildings are located in Belmopan city. History of Belmopan:

In the year 1961, Hurricane Hattie destroyed greater part of houses and business places in the capital city Belize and due to the destruction, government of Belize formed the new capital that would be located on the improved terrain and far from costal line. In the year 1962, the new capital Belmopan came into existence. Belize was the British Colony in the year 1964 and funded to build the new city and in the year 1967, work began and various buildings and industries were developed in the capital city.
