Kardla was the small village inhabited by Swedes in the year 1564 along the Baltic Sea and in the year 1830, cloth factory was established in the town due to which the village prospered and in the year 1849, port was established and used for trading purpose but the port was destroyed in during the Second World War. Kardla officially became town in the year 1938 in Hiiu County.
