Lukulu is a town located in the Western Province of the Southern African country, Zambia. It is located on the Zambezi River between 14°24′30″ S latitude and 23°16′00″ E longitude. Lukulu is situated around 630 km northwest of Livingstone city and 600 km northwest of Lusaka, the capital and largest city of Zambia. Lukulu is basically a market town and also houses a hospital and many schools. Its beach on the Zambezi River is one of the tourist favor sites in the town. Lukulu is also one of the gateways to a prominent natural tourist destination, the Liuwa Plains National Park.

 

Getting Lukulu:

Lukulu has a small airport but currently no flight serves airport. So, most international tourists visiting Lukulu come through Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka. This airport is situated around 620 km southeast of Lukulu and operates flights from/to many Asian, African and European cities including Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Dubai, Johannesburg, Durban and Amsterdam.

Road connectivity from Lukulu to its nearby towns is not in good condition, so only few bus companies offer service in the area. So hiring a car with driver would be helpful for intercity travel.

 

Food and Shopping in Lukulu:

Lukulu houses two famous traditional markets with items ranging from handicraft products to clothes to jewelry. Products are affordable, but no credit card facility there, so make sure of local currency in the pocket. There are also many traditional restaurants in Lukulu.

Zambezi:

The Zambezi is considered as Africa’s 4th longest river with a flow of 2,574 km. The town of Lukulu is located on the bank of Zambezi River, where visitors can involve themselves in fishing, swimming and relaxation.

 

Liuwa Plain National Park:

The Liuwa Plain National Park is one of the top tourist destinations in Western Zambia. Situated around 50 km west of Lukulu, the park was first developed as a game reserve in the 19th century during the colonial period and was promoted as national park in 1972. Apart from a substantial number of wild animals, the park is also famous for bird watching with around 330 bird species. Typical lioness Lady Liuwa is one of the highlights of the park.

 

Mongu:

Mongu is a colorful city, located around 100 km south of Lukulu. The city is home to diverse tourist attractions like a cathedral, a water tower, a museum and scenic spots as well as a large market with a wide selection of local handicraft products and clothes. There is a direct road link from Lukulu to Mongu.
