Momeik also Known as Mong Mit is situated in the Asian continent towards the northeast of Myanmar in the Shan State. Shwelli River flows besides the town, Momeik and fishing, farming production of rubber and coconut farming helps in the development of economy. The town is sited at a distance of 520 km from the capital city, Naypyidaw. The geographical coordinates puts the place at 23007’00” N and 96041’00” E.
Climate in Momeik:
During summer season the average temperature is 310C and in winter temperature drops to 200C, as it has tropical monsoon climate and very warm throughout the year.
History of Momeik:
As per historians, during the year 1238 Momeik town was the part of the Hsenwi State. In the year 1465, in order to save the Kingdom of Momeik the ruler gave away a certain amount of ruby crystals to the invading Burmese King. In the year 1542 to 1546 wars were waged by neighboring kingdom rulers in order to gain supremacy over Momeik town. King Bayinnaung was victorious in many battles fought in order to gain supremacy over Momeik town. After the successful conquest of Momeik the King Bayinnaung ordered the creation of a Pagoda within Momeik. The King also donated a bell to Shwezigon Pagoda which had scriptures written in Mon, Pali and Burmese language.
In the year 1885, the ruler of Momeik passed away leaving behind a young heir to the throne. During this period the British conquered the entire Shan state and Momeik fell under their control. Many national struggles took place in the region against the British oppression. The year 1948 marked the beginning of Myanmar Independence and the end of the British rule in the entire country.
