Dhanbad is a well known city and the administrative headquarter of Dhanbad District in Jharkhand State. Dhanbad is popularly called as ‘Coal Capital of India’ because of its greater presence of coal mining industries and is considered as forty second largest city of the country. Dhanbad is positioned at an elevation of 227 meters and is located between 22.8°N latitude and 86.45°E longitude. Dhanbad shares its borders with Dumka & Giridih in the north, West Bengal State in the south and east region and Bokharo in the west. Dhanbad experiences a humid subtropical climate and Damodar, Jamunia and Khudia the major rivers flowing through Dhanbad.

Etymology and History of Dhanbad:-

Dhanbad is the original name of Dhanbad, derived from two words Dhan (paddy) and Baid (land). The literal meaning of Dhanbad is ‘Paadyland’. Dhanbad witnessed the travel of the famous person Hieun Tsang.

British Empire established Anumandal Office in Govindpur Block, one of the historical places in Dhanbad. Dhanbad was formed as district on 24 October 1956 and before the creation of the Jharkhand State, it was in Bihar State and served as the district headquarter.
