History of Ibague:
Ibague was established in the year 1550, as “Villa de San Bonifacio de Ibague del Valle de las Lanzas” and city was established in the current location in the year 1551, due to regular attack by indigenous Pijaos. Ibague was the capital of New Granada from the year 1854, but later when Tolima department was established, Ibague became the capital of Tolima and Tolima University was established in the year 1945.
