Khulna is a well known city as well as the administrative headquarters of Khulna District in southern part of Bangladesh. It is placed on the banks of Bhairab and Rupsha rivers at the coordinates of 22°49′0″ in the north and 89°33′0″ in the east. Khulna is the third biggest city in the country and the major city in Khulna Division.

Mongla Seaport is the second largest seaport and Khulna River Port is one of the ancient river ports in Bangladesh. Khulna is located about 262 kms southwest of national capital Dhaka and about 420 kms far from Chittagong City.

Khulna City occupies an area of 59.57 sq. km. and is positioned at an altitude of 9 meters. Khulna District is surrounded by Bagerhat District to the east, Satkhira District on the west, Jessore District to the north and Bay of Bengal towards south.

History of Khulna:

According to Mythology, Khulna derives its name from Khullaneswari Temple located on the banks of River Bhairab.

Khulna district came into existence on 1882. Khulna formed as a Municipal Council in 1884 and as a City Corporation in 1990.
