Myeik is situated in the southern most part of Myanmar in Tanintharyi Region. Myeik city is sited at a distance of 1,110 km from the capital city, Naypyidaw and fishing, farming of cash crops is the main form of living in the town. The Tanintharyi Region is surrounded by the Andaman Sea. The geographical coordinates puts the place at 12026’ N and 98036’ E.

 

Climate in Myeik:

During summer season the average temperature is 330C and in winter temperature drops to 200C offers tropical monsoon climate with long wet season from February to November.

 

History of Myeik:

During the 11th century, the entire region of Tanintharyi was ruled by the Pagan Empire. During this period ports were constructed on the coast of Myeik. The year 1287, witnessed the rise of Siamese Kingdom and the fall of the Pagan Empire in Tanintharyi region. During the 16th century, the city witnessed the arrival of European traders at the port. Trade between far away countries began to improve. The city’s economy thrived as trade prospered in the region. In the year 1765, the Burmese defeated the foreign power in Myeik. This event proved strategically important in order to overthrow the ruler of Ayutthaya Kingdom which eventually took place in the year 1767. However the first Anglo-Burmese war was fought in the year 1826 through which the British acquired the Tanintharyi region through a treaty signed by the then Burmese ruler. During the Second World War the Japanese forces invaded Tanintharyi region and took control of the entire area. After the end of the Second World War the British regained control over the entire region. Restoration work began in the region. The year 1948 marked the beginning of Myanmar independence and the end of British rule in the country.

Myeik serves with some of the traditional and authentic cuisines and there are plenty of food markets by the water front and small food stalls which offers Chinese, Indian, Nepalese and Burmese vegetarian or non-vegetarian cuisines.

Dawei

Previously known as Tavoy, this place falls on the west coast of Myanmar is a famous Buddhist center.

 

Myeik Archipelago

A formation consisting of a group of Islands provides picturesque scenery with bright blue skies, open sea, golden sand and lush greenery in the background.

 

Kawthaung

Located towards the south of Myanmar this place was once known as Victoria point. There are many water sport activities one can indulge in such as Scuba diving, water scooter rides, etc.

 

Big Reclining Buddha

Big Reclining Buddha is situated on the island and tourists have to hire a boat to reach the shrine is one of the prime attractions in Myeik.

Myeik city is well connected via airways to places within Myanmar is served by Myeik Airport located at the distance of 6 kms from middle of the city. Airport caters with the arrival and departure of flights to and fro places like Yangon, Mandalay, Kawthaung and Maulamyine.

Myeik city is well connected via road to places within the country, Myanmar and there are Buses available daily, commuting passengers from Myeik to places such as Mandalay, Yangon and other places within Tanintharyi region.

Inter city transportation is facilitated by Buses, Cycle Rickshaws, Horse carriage and Taxis.
