Georgetown is the capital of the Demerara-Mahaica region in Guyana is placed at the mouth of the Demerara River on the Coast of Atlantic Ocean covering an area of 200 square kilometers (77 square miles) and located at an elevation of -2 meters (-6 feet) from the sea level. Georgetown is also identified as the “Garden City of Caribbean” and serves as the financial, retail and administrative center of the county and home to several industries in the city. Georgetown is also the transportation hub in the country and there are distinct educational institutions and hospitals in the city. Coordinates of Georgetown are 6.8000° N, 58.1667° W.

History of Georgetown:

Dutch established the town during the 18^th century on the banks of the Demerara River but the colony was confined by British in the year 1781. In the year 1782, French captured the region and developed the town and later made the capital of the colony and named the town as La Nouvelle Ville, but in the year 1784, Dutch regained the power and ruled the town. The town was renamed as Georgetown in the honor of King George III in the year 1812.

Georgetown Lighthouse:

Georgetown Lighthouse was constructed in the year 1817 by the Dutch at the height of 31 meterd (103 feet) and the prominent landmark in the country and lighthouse is the National Monument of the country.

Guyana National Museum:

Guyana National Museum is open from Monday to Friday (9 am to 4:30 pm) and Saturday from 9 am to noon and the museum was founded in the year 1868 which showcases the history and area of Guyana.

St. George’s Cathedral:

St. George’s Cathedral is one of the tallest wooden churches in the world, inaugurated in the year 1892 and structure of the church was completed in the year 1899, located at the height of 143 feet (43.5 meters) is one of the National Monuments of the country.

Brickdam Cathedral:

Brickdam Cathedral was designed by Leonard Stokes and built in Roman architectural style during 1920s and it is the Roman Catholic Cathedral visited by majority of people.
