Isafjordur is a town in Ísafjarðarbær municipality in the region of Vestfiroir region located in the North West part of Iceland. Fishing has been main industry in Isafjordur from several eras and there are many companies located in the town and hub to the University Centre of the Westjords. Isafjordur is famous for hosting festivals and concerts every year like Aldrei fór ég suður – Ísafjörður Rock Festival, The Ski Week Festival, Fossavatn Ski Marathon and Við Djúpið Music Festival visited by thousands of tourists throughout the year. Isafjordur is bounded by Hnífsdalur, Flateyri, Suðureyri, and Þingeyri towns and situated at the distance of 450 kilometers from Reykjavik, capital of Island. Coordinates of Isafjordur are 66.0758° N, 23.1267° W.

 

History of Isafjordur:

Isafjordur was first inhabited by Helgi Magri Hrólfsson in the 9th century and the town began to grow in the 16th century as trading post for foreign merchants but later the people migrated to different areas. Later in the year 1786, the town became municipality and there are many old houses in the town that were constructed during 18th century.

Local Folk Museum is positioned at the distance of 2 kilometers from center of the town is the oldest museum in the Iceland constructed in 1734 and has the largest collection of old timber frame house.

 

Miðkaupstaður:

Miðkaupstaður is also known as midtown is a main commercial center in the town surrounded by old houses, museums, harbor and warehouses is a must visit place.
