Joshimath also known as Jyotirmath is a municipal town located in Chamoli District in Uttarakhand in India. It is home to one Cardinal Pitha established by Adi Shankaracharya. Joshimath is located between 30.57° north latitude and 79.57° east longitude and situated about 292 km away from the state capital city Dehradun.

Joshimath is a tourist destination houses prominent parks, worship places and historical monuments. Apart from the tourism sector, the town is also home well facilitated educational institutions, Ayurvedic therapy centres and nationalized banks.

 

Culture, fair and festival of Joshimath:

The local Hindu people celebrate Ram Navami, Nag Panchmi, Raksha-Bandhan, Krishna Janmastami, Dushera, Dipavali, Holi, Sivaratri and Makar Sankranti with great enthusiasm.

 

Connectivity to Joshimath:

National Highway 58 passes through Joshimath connects it with national capital city Delhi, Badrinath and Mana Pass. There are plenty of tourist vehicles plying between New Delhi to Badrinath via Haridwar and Rishikesh connects Joshimath.

Rishikesh Railway Station is the nearest railway station to Joshimath and also one can board trains at Haridwar Railway Junction which is located about 23 km away from Rishikesh Railway Station. Joshimath is 267 km away from the Dehradun Airport.

 

Tourist places near Joshimath:

Shankaracharya Math:

Shankaracharya Math is a holy place and was built by Saint Adi Shankaracharya and also houses Badrinarayan and Rajrajeshwari Devi Temple. There is a cave where Adi Shankaracharya has completed meditation.

 

Narsinh Temple:

Narsinh Temple is an ancient temple devoted to Lord Vishnu. It has the idol of Narsinh and is believed that the temple was built by Shankaracharya. Narsinh Temple is the major temple of Joshimath and annual fair is held in this temple.

 

Bhavishya Kedar Temple:

Bhavishya Kedar Temple is another famous temple of Joshimath and has small idol of Lord Shiva. It has near proximity with Narsinh Temple and other worship places.

 

Tapovan:

Tapovan is a viewpoint located 11 km away from the heart of Joshimath Town. It has natural warm irrigate bounces and there are peaks include high quantity of sulfur.

 

The Nanda Devi National Park:

The Nanda Devi National Park is a major tourist attraction stretched over an area of about 630 sq. km. The park was announced as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 1988 and the 3 sides of the park is covered by Nanda Devi Mountain.

Nanda Devi National Park is home to leopards, Himalayan black-bears, Serow, Himalayan musk deers and Himalayan Tahrs. Also there are few Brown-bear, ruby throat, bharal, langur and grosbeaks found in the park. The park houses more than hundred genus of birds include Indian tree pipit, orange-flanked bush robin, yellow-bellied fantail flycatcher, vinaceous-breasted pipit and blue-fronted redstart. Presently, it is shining as a major tourist destination of the state.

 

Govindghat:

Govindgaht is located on the banks of the River Alaknanda and is about 19 km away from Joshimath Town. It is widely popular for its worship place Hemkund Sahib. It is located in the vicinity of Laxman Temple and Gurudwara.
