History of Sao Luis:
Sao Luis was occupied by native Tupinamba tribe and in the year 1612, French founded the city and named Equinoctial France. French constructed the fort in the honor of King Louis XIII and named it has Saint Louis but later it was captured by the Portuguese in the year 1615 and named the region as Sao Luis. The Dutch captured the region but could not establish the settlement in the city. During the Portugal rule economy of the city was mainly based on tobacco, cacao and sugar cane. During the American Civil War, the city exported cotton to Great Britain. At present Sao Luis has preserved heritage of Portuguese colonial.
