Virtuous Surathkal Beach – Mangalore, Karnataka
There is a place in Karnataka by name Surathkal where this beach is situated. This is the beach that reflects the picturesque splendor; it lies on the shores of the Arabian Sea. It is one of the best beaches around Mangalore. It is very clean and calm. There is a light house nearby and the view from the top is just amazing. There is a religious belief according to the Hindu mythology. It is believed that when Ravana went to bath, Ganesha was catching his Shiva Linga and was waiting for Ravana. Ravana dint turn up for a long time, therefore he placed the Shiva Linga at Gokarna and proceeded looking for Ravana. When Ravana got back to this place he tried removing the Shiva Linga but he could not get it off the ground. Meanwhile the headpiece of the Shiva Linga fell on this place by name Surathkal and there fell another piece at Murudeshwara.
Other than these views you can find some industries like the as Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), a chemical company, Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Limited (MCF), New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) and, BASF.
The name of this place is originated from the Tulu word “Shiradakal” that means ‘headstone’ in Kannada. There are some sightseeing places for you to visit like the Sadashiva Temple that is located on the hill, Krishnapura Math that is 4 kms, the Ashta Math that was founded by Sri Madhwaacharya, you can also have the spectacular view of the sea by standing on the lighthouse that is located on the rocky hills.
The nearest airport to this place is at Baje that is in Mangalore and is about 16 kms away from this beach. The seaport that is near to this place is the New Mangalore seaport that is 5 kms away. You can reach this place by train and the nearest railway station is the Konkan station that is around 4 kms away from south of NITK. You can even travel by road in the ‘17’ national highway and Udupi is 41 kms towards the north.
