History of Aalst:
Aalst was settled from the 9th century and was named as Villa Alost and during the Holy Roman Empire the town was the capital of Flanders province and enjoyed little independence compared to other regions in the country during the rule of the Holy Roman Empire. Town Hall construction began in the middle of the 12th century, is the oldest town hall in Belgium and suffered during the eighty years war from 1568 to 1648 and later captured by French Marshal Turenner in the War of Devolution in the year 1667.
