There was Thracian settlement established in the 5th-4th centuries BC in what is today Kyustendil. It was later settled by Roman in the 1st century AD who founded a balneological resort and major stronghold during their period. Kyustendil derives its name from the Turkish word ‘Kostendil’ meaning ‘Konstantin’s bath’.
