Sonapani is situated on the Indian continent in Uttarakhand state in the district of Nainital. The coordinates to Sonapani are 29⁰30’36” N and 79⁰38’8” E. Sonapani is 11 meter from the sea level. During the summer season the temperature ranges from 10 ⁰C to 27 ⁰C and in winter season the temperature ranges from 3 ⁰C to 17 ⁰C.

History of Sonapani

During the British Raj era in the country, India, there were cantonments formed in and around many hill stations. A group of Officers from a British regiment were on an excursion. They came across the place, Sonapani were they quenched away their thirst by drinking the water from a spring which was on the route taken by them. They were then attracted by the natural scenery in the region. An officer, belonging to the group, who discovered Sonapani, after being retired from his service, decided to settle down in the area and began cultivation.In the year 1947, which witnessed the end of the British rule and the beginning of Indian Independence, Sonapani remained under the administration of Uttarakhand state.

People & Culture of Sonapani

Sonapani offers a rich and diverse culture, with people from all caste, religion and sect residing throughout the place. Garhwali, Hindi and English are the languages spoken by the people in and around Sonapani, with Hindi being the local language. Dance has been the main culture in this region.
