History of Guntur
According to historians, the Bhattiprolu Kingdom ruled Guntur being the first rulers in the whole of south, of the nation. Scriptures dating back to the year from 921-928, mentions that Ammraja Vengi Chalukyan King ruled the lands. Inscriptions in one of the temples in Guntur dates back to the 1100 year indicating that the temple in which Lord Shiva presides was the oldest of the temple in the district. There is proof pointing to the fact that Buddha performed Buddhism in the place Guntur. Ancient texts belonging to the Treta Yuga and Dwapara Yuga also mentions about the names of two caves present in Guntur.
During the colonial period, the Europeans especially made Guntur their center of administration in the Guntur district in the year 1752. In 1788 the place was ruled by Nizams and Haidar Ali. After their defeat, the East India Company took over the place. Guntur was again the centre of administration of the district under the British Raj. The city, Guntur thrived under the British government. It became one of the important trading centers. Agriculture flourished and this led to exporting of huge amounts of food grains and food products to other parts of the country. The city witnessed the construction of rail links during the British Raj.
After Indian Independence, in the year 1947, villages were merged to expand the district of Guntur.
