Jalalabad is one of the emerging cities situated in eastern Afghanistan coming under Nangarhar Province geographically placed about 1886 feet above the sea level. Jalalabad is located near the confluence of 2 rivers namely river Kabul and river Kunar at a distance of 153 kms from capital city Kabul. It is the second largest city in eastern part of Afghanistan known for movement of trade, commerce and major industries such as papermaking, agricultural products, rice and sugarcane. Jalalabad coordinates with 34.26’03” degree North Latitude and 70.26’52” degree East Longitude.

 

Jalalabad History:

Formerly called as Adinapur, it was renamed as Jalalabad in 16th century in memory of Pir Roshan Jalala, who fought with the Mughals. Jalalabad was visited by famous Chinese traveler Huian Xang during 630 A.D. Jalalabad became a part of Mughal rule in the year 1570 when the place was ruled by Babur and was also ruled by the Ghaznivad rulers and Mongols. Jalalabad was also conquered by Maharaja Ranjith Singh in the early 19th century but was soon eliminated by the rulers of Durrani Empire. Jalalabad was also under the rule of the British from 1838 but withdrew from the city two years later.

Jalalabad is connected by good mode of road and rail means of network. There is a proposal to connect Jalalabad with Pakistan Railways for easy movement of goods, passengers and trade. The National Highway between Jalalabad and Kabul has been re-laid in recent times. There are also plans to link Jalalabad with Peshwar through highways. Jalalabad is also connected by airport but most often it is used only by the military troops and air force for deployment and movement of the troops.

The best time to visit Jalalabad will be during months of winter as the weather remains cool and favorable for the tourists. Summers are really hot and dry with hot desert air blowing across this period making it uncomfortable and unfavorable for the visitors.
