Sehwan Sharif is a town situated in Jamshoro District in Sindh province of Pakistan is known for archeological sites and it is believed that, Sufi patron saint Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar resided here during thirteenth century and his mausoleum attracts thousands of followers and tourists from all over the country annually. Dargah of Shahbaz Qalandar is another prime attraction and landmark of Sehwan Sharif. Pakistan’s largest freshwater lake ‘Manchar Lake’ is located few kilometers away from Sehwan Sharif.

 

Geography and Climate of Sehwan Sharif:

Sehwan Sharif is positioned on the west bank of the Indus River at a coordinates of 26.4193143° N 67.8593731° E.

Sehwan Sharif is placed about 150 kms northwest of Hyderabad, about 280 kms from provincial Karachi and about 1200 kms from national capital Islamabad.

Sehwan Sharif is generally cool in winter and hot in summer season.

 

History of Sehwan Sharif:

It is said that, Sehwan Sharif is named after the kingdom of Raja Dahir “Siwistan” or “Seevistan”. Sehwan Sharif was captured by Muhammad bin Qasim from the local king in 711 and Mahmud of Ghazni conquered it two centuries later. Sehwan Sharif also served as the capital of the Thatta Kingdom.

Sehwan Sharif has one airport but currently it is not served by regular flights and the nearest operational airport to Sehwan Sharif is Hyderabad Airport located at a distance of about 155 kms.

Sehwan Sharif Railway Station is located a short distance of 1 km from the centre of the town with trains to Nawabshah, Hyderabad, Karachi and other major towns of the province and country as well.

Manchar Lake:

Manchar Lake is considered as the largest freshwater lake in Pakistan is placed towards the west of Indus River. The lake covers an area 350 km² to 520 km², depends on season and is located at an elevation of 35 meters.

 

Ranikot Fort:

Ranikot Fort is one of the largest forts in the globe in Jamshoro, located about 90 kms from Sehwan Sharif. With a circumference of about 26 kilo meters, it is the largest fort in the world. Ranikot Fort is added to UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in the year 1993.
