History of Siauliai:

Siauliai is called by different names in the different languages like Saule, Siaule, Szawle, and Schaulen. The history of Siauliai dates back to 1236 when the Battle of Saule was fought between pagan Samogitians and the Livonian Brothers of the Sword. Siauliai achieved city rights in the year 1589 and it served as the administrative centre of Šiauliai County from 1994 to 2010.
