Yokohama is the second largest city after Tokyo in Japan and is one of the busiest port cities in Honshu having a total area of 437.38 sq kms. Yokohama History:

During the Edo Period Yokohama was a tiny fishing village as most of the people was engaged in fishing activities. A major turnaround took place during 1853 and 1854 when Commondore Matthew Perry landed with fleet of warships in Yokohama opening its doors to international trade and commerce which began as a major boost in this region. During the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Yokohama was developed as a major port city for silk trading and in the year 1870 gas fitted street lights were installed in the city. In the year 1872, Yokohama saw the first railway connectivity to Tokyo by launching railway lines.

A major earthquake shook the city in the year 1923 which saw large scale damage to life and property where many people were killed and rendered many homeless. Yokohama became a victim of Second World War in the year 1945 when the US Airforce dropped B-29 bombs on the city which turned the city into rubble within few minutes.
